Laura Gemser is back as everyone's favorite sexually active photographer, but the operative name here is not "Emmanuelle," it is "Emanuelle." (The Italian entries in this series purportedly changed the spelling of the first name to avoid lawsuits). Also distinguishing it from the softcore French Emmanuelle series is the graphicness of its content. In this picture Gemser travels the world for hot scoops with her secret camera, and for the first 40 minutes, it's a routine softcore sex film. Then Emanuelle joins a harem where she watches a woman manually stimulating a horse, escaping only to travel to an island where people have sex while watching snuff movies. She tracks down the illegal films thanks to a kinky congressman who gives her LSD and flies her to the banana republic where they are made. This film contains hardcore sex, but its most offensive aspect is the re-enactment of a snuff-movie filming, complete with bloody rape by gaffing hook and an absolutely grotesque scene in which a young woman has her breasts sawed off with a machete. Too extreme for the raincoat crowd and a bit slow for horror fans, it's likely to appeal only to curiosity-seekers and collectors of so-called "Video Nasties" banned in the UK. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

| the graceless step-uncle with a boner to Cronenberg's Videodrome and Assayas' demonlover has arrived on dvd. Interpid reportress Em(m)aneuelle ( the lovely Laura Gemsar) lollygags her way through a multinational investigation on...something, apparently aristocratic sex practices, and gets more than she bargains for. This is classic trash, folks. Dig the swinging seventies decor and the cheesy soundtrack. dig the softcore rompings and meandering plot. Blue underground has really done a class job on this disc, with a nice, uncut transfer (including the infamous snuff footage)an interview with director Joe d'amato (whose output makes takashi miike and r.w. fassbinder look like lay-abouts), a semi-academic accounting of the emmanuelle phenomna, and a rare audio interview with mrs gemsar. Anyone interested in sexploitation, trash, or the causal relation between sex, violence, and voyuerism should check this out. It's so bad it's great! |
