Synopsis
Tsukino Usagi is a young schoolgirl who begins a life of fantastic adventures in this first episode in the animated Sailor Moon saga. Usagi, a girl who can't seem to do anything right, saves a black cat from a pack of cruel teenage boys. To Usagi's surprise, the cat, clearly more than she appears, speaks to Usagi. In return for Usagi's kindness, the cat gives her a brooch that turns Usagi into Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon becomes a member of the Sailor Scouts, a group of super-powered girls who must protect the forces of good from a race of evil demons that prey on humanity. This long-running Japanese series has become immensely popular among children and adults worldwide, and many episodes are available on video in the United States. ~ Jonathan E. Hey. This DVD totally rocked! A whole lot of people hated it because of the sound. You're right. The sound sucked, but get over it already. Making animation is expensive. That's why lots of people cut corners. Anime has always been this way. Why do you think they have all those water colors? If it really bugs you THAT much, hit "mute". you know all the songs anyway. That's why it HAS subtitles. (well...maybe not...)

Yeah, so everyone see this. It's a great spin on that great "cartoon" that showed us that people with big eyes have feelings too.

Oh God. The sound quality is HORRIBLE. There is no other word for itjust plain awful! It sounds like everyone is trapped at the bottom of a well. There is no excuse for it either; I mean it was originally made in 1992, not 1902! However, once you get past that, it's so nice to see Sailor Moon as it was meant to be seen.
The first disc contains 3 episodes, numbers 2, 5, & 6 to be exact, that I had never seen before. This is because DiC just decided not to do them for whatever reason. Ok, so maybe the heroine follows a guy into a bar because a monster is after him, and maybe thats not the greatest example to set for young girls, but cats talk in this anime, are we really going to take every little detail and analyze it so much? Well, so DiC did that, but I shall not. Its really not that bad.
I wouldnt really recommend the uncut versions for younger viewers, but not for contentfor ability to read quickly. Sometimes the dialogue moves very fast and I bet it would be very frustrating for a younger audience.

In closing, if you grew up liking Sailor Moon, at least rent Disc 1, since you will get 3 episodes that are brand new to you. You will enjoy them.

I have read reams of complaints about the awful editing that DIC did to "Sailor Moon". Whole episodes disappeared. Genders were changed to not to upset the raving homophobic and not upset the "normal" gender roles. Rewriting all of the music and some of the dialog. And made Sailor Moon's girlfriend Jewish and her cat an old English mum.
While I fell in love with this silly Japanese cartoon through DIC's censored version, I have to admit, I miss the high quality sound from this original. And the music (but not the singer) was far superior. I mean we not only get MONO but AM quality MONO. UGH. I would have expected more from a 1992 television series. And the original music can only be described as dorky. Ultradorky. But the opening and closing songs have far superior lyrics than the DIC theme.
I think that you really have to love Sailor Moon a lot to enjoy this. And have adult reading skills - these people talk fast and that will frustrate the younger slower reader to no end.
It really makes you appreciate the DIC dub after all. But if you are a hardcode Sailor Moon fan, you will want to experience the original - even if the sound quality is horrible and the picture fuzzy. But then again, you finally get to hear it with the characters REAL NAMES and without the terrible "Sailor Says" crap.
