First movie was amusing. This one is bad.

Better than the original -- more cars, more racing, more turns

2 Fast 2 Furious is much better than the original. Sure, the plot is still outlandish and, as an action adventure movie, it's good enough but not anything amazing. What I like is that director John Singleton creates more dynamic visuals and develops more cohesive plot elements than the original. The characters and relationships are fun, such as the bantering rivalry between Brian (Paul Walker) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson). Tyrese with his energy and ease has the best performance among the cast, followed by rap star Ludacris who surprised me with how much presence he has as the supporting character, Tej. On the other hand, Devon Aoki's performance is ridiculous -- she can't act worth beans and why is she headlined when her character doesn't contribute anything to the plot? Yes, yes, eye candy -- throw in the girl driver and make sure she's in a bikini most of the film.

But the REAL eye candy are the cars. I am impressed with the car love -- there seems to be a greater variety of cars being showcased this time around and the camera worships them. Besides the imports (Mitsubishi Spyder with exquisite detailing, Nissan Skyline, Mitsubishi Evo 7, Honda S2000, Mazda RX-7, among others), there are a number of gorgeous American cars (Chevy Corvette, Saleen Mustang, Dodge Viper, Montecarlo).

The racing here is better, too. In The Fast and The Furious, it was basically drag racing -- a straight shot down the asphalt. But I love turns, and I got my wish fulfillment in the first street racing sequence where four cars squeal around a city course like a live-action version of Gran Turismo. Later, there is a nod to the rivalry between rice rockets and American muscle cars in a tag-team "barrel race" -- each car goes down a straight, does a 180 around a barrel, and comes back. Horsepower vs. Noz, hm...

So if you're into cars, watch this DVD. And don't forget the Extras, including an insightful director's commentary by Singleton, a "making of" short for Ludacris' music video, and a brief intro to several featured cars by the technical advisor, Craig Lieberman.

If you like fast car movies, this is a good one. The plot is full of predictable tricks and turns, but the movie is all about the ride, and the plot does its job from the back seat. the cars are cute, the drivers are pretty, and even the chicks have big shiny chrome plated balls.
The only thing that irked me was the way these guys keep looking over their shoulders at the other drivers while doing 150 mph in heavy traffic... didn't they ever learn to just use the rear view mirror?
Anyway, the stunt set ups are comic-book fabulous. They are ALL ridiculous, but they are all way cool. Its fantasy at its best -- the way you'd LIKE things to be.
