We just watched Chronos on DVD (we rented it from another merchant as GC doesn't have it as of yet) and we both felt rather unsatisfied after it ended. It seemed as though many of the segments were very similar or practically exactly the same as in Koyaanisqatsi (especially the one of crosstown Park Avenue traffic). The music wasn't as interesting as in Koyaanisqatsi or Baraka and there didn't seem to be a logical flow from one segment to another as in the two other films. Some of the time lapse photography scenes were actually quite boring, as their subject matter was completely immobile (like the Pyramids and several sites of ruins) and the movement of the clouds and the change of the light was too subtle to make much of an impact. The pieces that did work were interesting, but they were too few and far between.
I had been looking forward to seeing this film and it has been on my wish list for quite some time, and I guess I'd have to say that it was totally not worth the enthusiasm I had generated for it. Oh well. |
