I read the book regarding the creation of this movie a long time ago and finally got around to seeing it ten years later. Its hard to transport myself back to the early nineties but maybe there was some cinematic void at the time that needed filling. It seems like an A plus film school project expanded to movie length. At the end of the day, the back story is more interesting than the film itself. It gave Rodriguez an interesting start to a decidedly mediocre career IMHO.

It is what it is

For a low-budget-independent-art-house movie, El Mariachi is good. It is worth renting, if you are a Desperado/Once Upon a Time in Mexico fan. But I doubt you will want to watch it more than once, like you will Desperado/Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

By now, every cult film fan knows about this one. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, DO IT! This is the quinessential example of what a motivated director can do with $7000 & a great script. It's also a prime example of how a low-budget film can expand far beyond the limitations of its budget. There's so much story here you'll be totally amazed!
