On one hand, I think this sequel is like having Steven Seagal direct and act in a remake of Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress". It's a mumbly-jumbly concatenation of metal and meat. There's too much of everything, from monsters to monster chests to over-use of Jubei's sword technique. Yet everything lacks the creepiness, sexiness, and tightly-wound impact of the original.

However, with lowered expectations, I found it rated on par with MTV's "Newlyweds". A plot that manages to limp along. Some cool moments of flashy steel. Judicious amounts of jugglies. Interesting musak. Great looking peeps.

I rate this 7.5, as in 75% - a solid passible C.

A poor follow-up to the original film. by RFrazier February 17, 2004 - 9:03 AM PST

Jubei is *much* younger in this version. The animation style reminds me a lot of Peter Chung's work. Everyone is extremely ugly.

There's not much to say about the show. Every episode seems to follow the "monsterous ninjas attack, Jubei kills them" formula.

It has some graphic violence but without the over-the-top sexuality, it just doesn't seem like Ninja Scroll.

Basically, this is Ninja Scroll for 14 yr. old males.

i watched this not expecting much, but i was still disappointed. the original ninja scroll was a great movie. i understand that this is a tv show, so the violence and sexual content would be taken down a couple of notches, and the animation wouldn't be outstanding, but i had hoped they would make up for that with style and story. the plot by the end of this disc is that jubei is the reluctant bodyguard of some light maiden after dispatching about a dozen monsters.
this show just throws disposable monsters at jubei. they aren't much to speak of either, the original movie had only 8 monsters, but they had a kind of ninja/samurai/demon feel. they were all extremely skilled and deadly and each fight was brutal and desperate. these monsters were more like werewolves and a cat person and 30 foot giant who transforms into a car and even one guy that just had a centipede for a head.
the show had a lot of action, i'll give it that, and i had only watched the first four episodes, so there's a chance it could pick up. jubei is still pretty cool, though i'm not sure how this show relates to the movie sequentially. i suppose all ninja scroll fans will have to take a look, just don't expect too much.

A good set of anime for those new to the genre, most are violent, but all have good stories
