| The screenwriter sleptwalked through this one. A young man and woman from opposite sides of the tracks, each confronting professional setbacks of different kinds, meet cute and bicker until they discovery their true feelings, and so on, just as you might expect. The skating is beautiful, and both of the young stars are easy on the eyes. There's the usual buildup to the Big Game, no surprises there. I'd have enjoyed this more if it hadn't had such an unbearable 80s schlock soundtrack, which made it difficult to listen to arguments over whether to use fusty old classical music to skate by or edgy modern music. This trusty plot device, the standard feature of roughly a million prior movies from "The Glenn Miller Story" to "Flashdance," would have been more fun if the "modern" music had been the kind that stirs the blood twenty years later instead of elevator music. |
