| In 1984 I would have given this a 10+; the quality of the animation and the depth and subtlety of the story blew everyone away in those days. Well, time has marched on and darkened the luster of what is still probably the best of the UY films. The animation now seems jerky, the characters' lips don't match either the English or the Japanese dialogue (how spoiled we become...) the art style has of course dated, and later films like Dark City have made us more familiar with this sort of closed-universe story -- none of which will mean much to hardcore UY fans. That said, this is a beautifully imagined, fabulously directed film that rises above its subject matter and delivers a great experience. Right from the start the viewer is exposed to a torrent of brilliant scenes, that take the slapstick of the TV show into a strange, thoughtful ambience. Minor downers: The English dub is not good, particularly for the girls who are obviously being voiced by much older women, but there is so much dialogue and things happen so fast that the English speaking viewer is almost forced to watch the dub at first, or miss half of what is going on while reading subtitles. Also, this film makes no effort to explain the characters, their previous history together -- which is extensive -- or their relationships. Be warned, and try the first UY movie, Only You, as an intro if you're new to this. Otherwise, just plunge in and try not to intellectualize it too much. Enjoy! |

| A (growing) list of relatively unknown anime that you may have missed that will still knock your socks off. If you have a series you think should be on here, feel free to let me know. I'll give you credit for the find in the notes. |
