Synopsis
Matteo Garrone's The Embalmer tells the sad story of a love triangle. Peppino (Ernesto Mahieux), a mob-connected dwarf who works as a taxidermist, establishes a working relationship with Valerio (Valerio Foglia Manzillo), who loves animals. The closeted Peppino, who carries a torch for Valerio, is threatened when Valerio takes up with Deborah (Elisabetta Rocchetti), who moves in with the pair. Soon the tension leads to horrible acts committed by and on the different members of the group. The Embalmer was screened at the Director's Fortnight during the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

THE EMBALMER ought to have been called The Taxidermist, since that's what the main character does for a living. Definitely one of those "in-between" films that offers, for every good moment, another that doesn't work so well. The leads actors are fine (Valerio Foglia Manzillo, in fact, is one of the hottest, most beautiful young men in current films) and the story manages to be both obvious in some ways and subtle in others, constantly waffling between interesting and creepy/unpleasant. Much is alluded to rather than explained in detail, which may put off those who find foreign films "slow." I wish the DVD transfer had been better: the copy I watched was NOT widescreen, and the print quality was mostly crummy. Still, "The Embalmer" held our interest, and it'll probably hold yours.

Official Selection, Certain Regards... and more. Here is a bit more information on the films screened at the Cannes. I have attempted to list all the films that were considered for an award as well as any special screenings.
