One night, Gyun-woo meets a terribly drunken girl. He is ashamed to help her, but once he does, a deep sense of responsibility develops within him, and he decides to heal her pain. Even though she slaps him, pushes him into the pool, forces him to wear heels, he tolerates her. Will she stay after the pain is healed?
This is the import version of this film, and while not up to our usual high standards, it is the best version available at this time. When a domestic DVD is released, we will promptly replace the disc with its (ideally) superior counterpart.

The beginning of MY SASSY GIRL is so funny, witty and surprising that I held out great hope for this film. As it winds along, telling the love story of two rather mismatched Koreans, the movie takes some potshots at Korean cinema, creates some mini genre pieces of its own and even goes so far as to re-do one film that the characters tells us didn't work so well in its original form. Clever stuff, this!
Somewhere around the second hour, however, invention began to flag. Unfortunately so did the DVD I was watching: It began "pixelating" badly, then starting and stopping with a will of its own. Once I removed it from my player and saw that it was not obviously damaged in any way, I suspected a poor transfer by the originator. Guess I'll never know how the movie ends, but I do have my fond memories of its wonderful beginning. |

Many non-Korean fans don't know this, but this movie is actually based on a real story. In the movie the male character mentions about his story being made into a book and a movie. Well, it did. Most of the scenes from the movie came from the internet postings the guy wrote on a website. The only fully-fictional part is the ending(the real ending for the actual couple is unknown).
The female character is pretty much a copy of the actual person, who was just as sassy as the girl in the movie, if not more. For those who read the postings and the book, the movie came out as a little disappointment because it couldn't fully show the whole antiques the girl pulled and the guy had to suffer. But it was still a very good movie indeed.
I loved the movie, and for most of you out there, it should be a very good entertainment. It is funny, yet with a not-too-sweet-but-still-touching love twist. |
