1930s, Shanghai. Jin (played by HK actor Leslie Cheung), an underground Communist leader, is seriously ill. His longtime admirer Qiuqiu, a beautiful Shanghai girl who assumes the role of Jin's wife in order to protect Jin's real identity, goes to Payne, an American doctor working at a missionary hospital in Shanghai's concession, and asks for his help. Almost falling in love with Qiuqiu at the first sight, Payne takes the risk of violating the hospital rules and follows Qiuqiu to an isolated place where Jin lives.
While Payne becomes more and more obsessed with Qiuqiu, Qiuqiu is nevertheless deeply in love with Jin. She fantasizes about being Jin's real wife (who commits suicide in order to protect her husband) and, in a rare occasion, she makes love with an unconscious Jin in the name of his wife. Later, Qiuqiu is caught by the Nationalists. In order to save Qiuqiu, Jin turns himself in. At the time when Jin is about to be executed, Qiuqiu tells Jin that she is pregnant. After Jin is executed, Qiuqiu gives birth to a baby girl. The baby is born, but Qiuqiu dies of dystocia. At this point, Payne comes into the story again, assuming the role of the baby's father, raising her in a place far away from his own homeland...
