Synopsis
In an idealized New York City during the early '60s, Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) is a charming socialite with a youthful zest for life who lives alone in a nearly bare apartment. She has such a flippant lifestyle that she won't even give her cat a name, because that would be too much of a commitment to a relationship. Maintaining a childlike innocence yet wearing the most perfect of designer clothes and accessories from Givenchy, she spends her time on expensive dates and at high-class parties. She escorts various wealthy men, yet fails to return their affections after they have given her gifts and money. Holly's carefree independence is changed when she meets her neighbor, aspiring writer Paul (George Peppard), who is suffering from writer's block while being kept by a wealthy woman (Patricia Neal). Just when Holly and Paul are developing their sweet romance, Doc (Buddy Ebsen) appears on the scene and complicates matters, revealing the truth about Holly's past. Breakfast at Tiffany's was nominated for several Academy awards, winning Best Score for Henry Mancini and Best Song for Johnny Mercer's classic tune "Moon River". ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

It was Mickey Rooney, actually, in the review below; and whatever be the value of his performance, there is no doubt that the role as filmed is a racist stereotype of a Japanese American.
Despite that, I enjoyed the film. Audrey Hepburn is a swell actress who carries the film; there is strong support from the rest of the cast, but it is really she who shines. The book is by Truman Capote; and the topper is the terrific and haunting 'Moon River' theme song that has since become a classic of its own.

This film really helps define what is a romantic film, and helps set the standard for all films dealing in romance; one could call it the standard for a romantic film. And perhaps above even this, it blurs the lines between comedy and drama, in the end making it emotional and entertaining.

Andy Rooney especially does a good job with his role and was hilarious and truly timeless in his performance (as was Audrey Hepburn). From the beginning to the end of the film there is a steady progression through the story, never leaving one drunk with action or bored with rising plot. With an impressive score and powerful & unpredictable twists in the plot and very well acted & produced, it is a film that is both entertaining and provocative.

This list is from Austin360.com's article about Paramont Theatre's Summer Classic Film series. I thought their list and brief descriptions were pretty good so I put it up for all to enjoy. (Of course there isn't room for all the classics on one list.)
