It's too bad MST3K isn't still on the air; this is the kind of film they would have loved. This abhorrent masterpiece stars Jesse Ventura as Abraxas, an intergalactic supercop sent to Earth to prevent Secundus (Sven Ole Thorsen) from impregnating a woman (Marilyn Lightstone) with the "Komator", which is appparently an antichrist-like figure that holds the "anti-life equation", which is capable of destroying the universe. Or something.
This is a true rarity: a science fiction film that has absolutely NO shots of space. At all. The action takes place in two locations: a "space station" (dark room with some christmas lights and stereo equipment) and a very small town somewhere in Canada.
I think someone must have embezzled the money earmarked for special effects. Either that, or the hardware store was having a sale on fireworks.
The acting is positively atrocious, with Ventura doing a Midwestern Schwarzenegger. But then, you don't watch a film like this for the acting. (Or, if you're like me, you do.)
Overall, this is definitely worth watching. From the noticeably poor VHS artifacting in the opening credits, to the closing shot that DOESN'T EVER END EVER, it's a gem.
SHINING MOMENT -- Ventura after being kissed for the first time: "That was... pleasant." |
