Great series, but not up to the first season

I fell completely in love with the first season of this show, for numerous reasons: strong characters, its incorporation of modern technologies, a tightly woven plot, and the 24-hour-ticker device that adds a new dimension to a well-covered genre. While season two stands on its own, I definitely would watch the first season before this one.

The reason being, this season just isn't as strong. It's still very good, and many of the elements that made the first season so great are still in the show, along with most of the actors. However, it just wasn't as well written: the action felt a little boiler-plate, there were huge plot holes, and the sub-plots involving Kim were unwatchably inane. And while I can see other people viewing this as a positive, I missed the constant crazy plot twists of the first season, which competed with "Tales of the City" on a "say what?" factor.

The acting here is top-notch, of a quality you don't expect from network TV. All women in "24" are incredibly attractive. And I did appreciate the increased relevance and moral ambiguity of the show - the hero acts in ways that are occasionally reprehensible, even to other characters in the show.

For me it's not that important, but this season was a little better packaged than the first, with chapter breaks, director's commentary, alternate takes, and a making-of documentary.
