Using characters intended for an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, writers Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis created Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which began airing in 15-minute episodes as part of the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" programming. The first episode was a "stealth pilot," aired in the middle of the night with no promotion in December 2000. The animated series follows the misadventures of a group of fast food-shaped detectives living in a crumbling New Jersey. Expanding on the superhero deconstruction of the animated series The Tick, the show follows the daily toils of three would-be crimefighting roommates with irreverent, absurd humor. The supposed leader, Master Shake, frequently puts the rest of the group in danger with his self-centered pursuits. Frylock, the brains of the group, is the only one to possess actual superpowers, or skills, for that matter. The mush-mouthed Meatwad is the bumbling good-natured fool with useless yet hilarious shape-shifting abilities. The three roommates attempt to do battle with the experiments created by the villainous Dr. Weird, a mad scientist, as well as the occasional space creature. However, the team spends most of their energy trying to swim in the pool belonging to their hairy next-door neighbor, Carl. The character designs were all created with layered Photoshop images and then crudely animated by the folks at the Williams Street studios. Some of the series' characters have appeared on other wickedly funny Cartoon Network shows like Sealab 2021 and The Brak Show. | Don't listen to the critics, ATHF is an excellent and very funny show. The episode with David Cross as Happy Time Harry will have you constantly laughing. This show, not unlike Space Ghost Coast to Coast, has an element of the absurd in it. If you "don't get" Python you might have a problem here as well...although ATHF is more accessible than MP. |

i know that ATHF is part of adult swim's hot lineup, but i just don't get it. i watched most of the eps on disc 1 (they're like 10-15 mins each), and got only a couple of actual laughs. i LOVE the Tick and Invader Zim, and did not find this to be anywhere on par with those, though the humor goes in the same directions- pushing classic hero plotlines in mildly absurd, unexpected directions, and using bumbling but extremely zealous protagonists.
the Greencine synopsis is pretty accurate overall, but doesn't mention that the plots don't really seem to go anywhere- to call the crew crimefighters is to be very generous, and there's no continuity from ep to ep, except for the opening scene, which is a running gag about the cliche mad-scientist's invention gone awry. the meatpad character does get some funny lines, but he's 'mush-mouthed' sometimes beyond comprehension, though if you listen to a lot of rap, this probably won't be a problem.
CAVEAT- i haven't tried watching this stoned- that would definitely help... |
