A very bland Nuku Nuku by fdguarino March 5, 2004 - 11:32 AM PST

On it's own, Nuku Nuku Dash is not really all that bad. It has all the elements typical of Shounen anime including some fan-service and even some mecha. However, compared to the original All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku it is both bland and uninteresting.

In this version, Nuku Nuku lacks the youthful exuberance and cat-like behavior that made her so endearing in the original. She is much more that emotionless android. All the other characters have also been changed enough to remove any attributes that made them interesting and enjoyable in the original show.

If you see this version first, it may not be so bad. But if you saw and enjoyed the original, this version will seem a sad and pale version in comparison.

Cosmetically this could almost pass for a sequal to the original Nuku OVA. Almost all the characters look and sound exactly the same. That is except for the 2 main characters Nuku Nuku and Ryuunosuke. Ryuunosuke is now a 14 year old kid with a crush on Nuku Nuku. Why would a 14 year old boy have a crush for what was his cat? Oh yeah, just forget about that whole origin story that was used in the OVA...she escaped from a lab in this one.

The first thing that comes to mind for me with this series is Highlander 2. A good original story, and a sequal made with the same characters but pretending the original never happened. I kept watching this hoping that it would end up being a dream sequence or something....no dice. Everything looks the same, but its gone from a unique entertaining series to a story about a boy with a crush on the girl that moves into his house. Its been done many times before, and usually in a much better fashion. This series certainly tried to be more serious, but it just didn't work.

I'm not sure I can recommend this series to anyone. There are a couple of touching moments and a couple of new characters that are entertaining, but they don't make up for all the other flaws. Do yourself a favor, rent the original and pass this one up.

Nuku Nuku was hilarious, even if dated.

This is a horrible... horrible version. Terrible storylines. The most interesting thing was the 6 year old going on 36 girl with a surreal sense of the world around her. But she was just present in one episode, and used to provide Nuku Nuku with an excuse to go outside just so a fight scene would take place.

The fight scenes are just... horrible.

The comedy is just horrible too. It is not done in the spirit of the original Nuku Nuku. The enemies are so horrible too -- totally ready to kill one moment, whinning about the unfairness of the world as they dies.

This is not Nuku Nuku Dash. This is Negative Nuku Nuku.

Give this a serious pass.
