I've liked other films by Sogo Ishii, such as Crazy Thunder Road (1980) and Crazy Family, but I didn't feel that this is his best work.
As far as I could tell, this film is about a monk who, for reasons that are never made that clear, makes it his mission to kill a "demon" who is actually the prince of a defeated clan who kills a whole bunch of the other clan's soldiers. I didn't really understand too much other than that. I liked some of the music, there's some nice cinematography, and there's a pretty cool climactic duel between the monk and the "demon" (I liked the way that the monk armed himself sort of like the main character in Crazy Thunder Road), but otherwise, this move felt kind of long. |
