Even though the main character is surrounded by and participates in some fairly graphic s/m, she comes across as a gentle, likeable person. Whether you view her as a victim of circumstance, a metaphor for the corruption of Japanese society, or a willing participant in stylized fetishistic debasement (is it debasement if she is willing?), Ai is a compelling character portrayed with great courage and skill by actress Miho Nikaido.
I would not agree with the other reviewer here who called this pseudo-porn. Porn is primarily about genitalia. This film is more about decadence and the dark depiction of the s/m lifestyle in Japan. It is erotic and disgusting from one scene to the next (and occasionally juxtaposed), but the empathy felt for the main character raises this film above any simple porn movie. |

| After reading another review about "Tokyo Decadence", I felt compelled to write my own. First of all, I think it's a very sexy flick. In graphic images it depicts the depravity of S/M customers and sex workers making a living in Tokyo. While being fiction the story of the heroine is believable. She's not without redeeming qualities. She's suffering, but there is a way out for her. Watch it, if you're curious about the scene and want to be entertained ( and maybe aroused....) |

| I swear that this movie has turned me off to ANY japanese movies with any cute girls, or great bodies anymore. The opening scene was stupid; a guy flattering a hooker as the perfect female? To top it off, the leading girl has some f-ed up teeth. If I was her, I'll spend my dirty money on a dentist. To her credit though, she has a pretty nice body, but her face has done enough damage. Do not rent this due to its box-cover or out of curiousity. I've watched only for five minutes I would demand a refund if possible. |
