Synopsis
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the mysterious drama Mystic River is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane and adapted by screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Set in an Irish neighborhood in Boston, Jimmy, Sean, and Dave are three childhood friends who are reunited after a brutal murder takes place. Reformed convict Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn) and his devoted wife Annabeth (Laura Linney) find out that their teenage daughter Katie (Emmy Rossum) has been beaten and killed. Jimmy's old friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) is the homicide detective assigned to the case, along with partner Whitey Powers (Laurence Fishburne). Jimmy also gets his relatives, the Savage brothers (Adam Nelson and Robert Wahlberg), to conduct an investigation of their own. Jimmy and Sean both start to suspect their old pal, Dave Boyle (Tim Robbins), who lives a quiet life with his wife Celeste (Marcia Gay Harden) but harbors some disturbing secrets. Clint Eastwood won a Golden Coach for Mystic River at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Liked the movie a lot, but what was the point of the scene at the end where Jimmy's wife convinces him that he must go on? Her role was an empty shell until that scene, so it is very incongruent. Unconvincing. Disconnected. All of a sudden she starts this melodramatic farce and fails miserably.

This movie was irritating for the following reasons:
What is the point of Sean's creepy wife on the phone?
How did Dave do so well in the investigation room presuming that he is a small town guy who had never been arrested before?
Why is Brendan's brother mute?
Why should we care when Jimmy does horrible things and has horrible things done to him when we already know he's a tough guy criminal?
Why does the movie drag on for another ten minutes after the finale?
Why doesn't anyone care about Dave?
If you can manage to suspend your disbelief and stop watching it after the real ending then maybe you will enjoy this movie. It just left me angry.

This film was excellent. Normally, I don't do drama's, but I was curious as to what the buzz was about. I wasn't disappointed at all. I believe Sean Penn won the Best Actor Award (Oscar's) for this role, and it was well worth it. I don't want to go to any specifics, but I highly recommend this film to movie afficionados. Over all, every aspect of this film is of the utmost quality. Go see it.
