Synopsis
Set in a small fictional town in the U.S. during the 1930s, Lars von Trier's Dogville was filmed in a studio with a minimal set and features narration by John Hurt. On the run from a group of gangsters, Grace (Nicole Kidman) arrives in the small mining town of Dogville. Town philosopher Tom Edison (Paul Bettany) takes her in and strikes a deal with her: She'll work for the townsfolk in exchange for a safe place to hide; after two weeks the people will vote for her to either stay or go. Grace agrees to the terms and ends up meeting the locals, including the town doctor (Philip Baker Hall), shopkeeper (Lauren Bacall), and apple farmer (Stellan Skarsgård). Eventually, Grace's standing in the town takes a downward shift as the search for her intensifies. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Amazing but disturbing movie by Krishna72 December 19, 2006 - 10:34 PM PST

Dogville had a fairly strong impact on me. It is very disturbing though, leaving a dark feeling in us long after the movie is over. I found the lack of a real setting for this movie rather beautiful and dream-like.

It's long. There's no set. The voice over is annoying. It seems really pretentious in the beginning. And it's really fucking sad.

Pretty much the only reason I kept watching was because of the cast. I kept seeing all my favorite actors pop up, one after the other, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Davies, Philip Baker Hall, and Chloe Sevigny all in one movie? I thought there had to be some reason they all elected to be in it.

And I liked this movie. Allthough at times it seemed pretentious, and though it looked as though it was going to be one of those everything-bad-happens-to-the -true-pure-soul-and -it-never-ends -and-there-is -no-sunlight-ever -and-everything-is -horrible-forever -and-ever type of things, I felt it righted itself in the end. It was one of the most well crafted allegories i've ever seen. It was incredibly moving, and above all, to me at least, held a great deal of truth.
