Based on Sir Walter Scott's narrative poem "The Lady of the Lake," opera composer Gioacchini Rossini's La Donna del Lago follows a pair of lovers through the pitfalls of feudal Scotland. This video production was recorded in 1992 at the Teatro alla Scala in Italy, and features director Werner Herzog as well as vocalists Riccardo Muti, and June Anderson. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

| Watching opera on video just isn't as good as seeing it live. That said, this is a pretty good production, even taped. There are some fine performances, solid orchestral backing, and the sets are amazing. The opera itself is quite tuneful, though a bit slow moving at times. Overall, it's a very enjoyable show. |

| {a list in progress}: GC's 'Music' and 'Music Videos/Performance' genres return tons of entries, mostly pop, but still omit a lot. Here's what I find (1/08) of 'classical' opera & ballet, loosely defined, but excluding purely instrumental performances. |
