before there was walt disney and his dream factory, there was winsor mccay, who felt that dreams deserved close attention, and drew his stories with one eye firmly closed in REM sleep. in particular, the flying house is a shock of dream logic applied to storytelling, without being abstractly experimental. it's also a gas, and so are gertie the dinosaur, how a mosquito operates and the rest.
