In the first decades of the 20th century, Winsor McCay was one of America's finest and most popular cartoonists, and he was a groundbreaking pioneer of animated filmmaking. This video release collects every surviving animated film McCay created, including the famous Gertie the Dinosaur, Little Nemo In Slumberland (based on his wildly successful newspaper comic feature), The Sinking of the Lusitania, and The Flying House. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

| before there was walt disney and his dream factory, there was winsor mccay, who felt that dreams deserved close attention, and drew his stories with one eye firmly closed in REM sleep. in particular, the flying house is a shock of dream logic applied to storytelling, without being abstractly experimental. it's also a gas, and so are gertie the dinosaur, how a mosquito operates and the rest. |
