I rented this to get up to speed on the life of Beethoven, which the film did for me. The mystery of the immortal beloved kept me guessing until the end. Gary Oldman portrays the torment of deafness movingly. Artistic heroes don't seem to dwell on anything but their creativity, sloughing off pain in any way they can manage. I just finished watching "Chai-hwa-seon", the story of a tormented Korean painter, and the similarities are strong.
