This majestic, beautiful, hauntingly sad film rises enormously above its subject matter to become a meditation on urban life, terrorism, human happiness and Japan's role in the postmodern world. Released just months before the Tokyo subway gas attacks which it partly anticipates, it's the best depiction of a modern nation dissolving into paranoia and militarism since Doctor Strangelove. The "coup d'etat" scene at the end is even more chilling for those who recognize those buildings and what they represent, but almost every scene in this film could be parsed with similar good effect -- it's just that well-done. A few caveats include the Kubric-style slow pacing which you'll either love or hate, a couple of intrusive comic-relief scenes toward the end and the fact that some of the minor characters and side-references won't make much sense to anyone not clued into the Patlabor backstory. A good introduction would be the Patlabor 1 movie, also by Oshii and also excellent, though it doesn't rise to this level.

The 5 on top are my favorite One Disc rentals for people who don't like the wait between volumes for anime series.
