| It's such a relief to see Jane Austen's material treated with respect in a film. Ang Lee shows real affection for all the characters in this classic. Everything he adds serves to make the novel work visually rather than to impose an inconsistent vision on it. Hugh Grant takes the somewhat opaque and underwritten character of Edward Ferrars and fleshes it out into someone with heartbreaking appeal. Emma Thompson's Elinor is a triumph. I'm not a big Kate WInslet fan, but even she does fine here as Marianne, and everyone else is just about perfect. Fantastic sets. I've watched this over and over with no diminution of pleasure. How I wish someone could make a "Pride and Prejudice" or an "Emma" this good. |
