This feature-length sci-fi offering is a spin-off of a popular cartoon from Japanese television. In this installment, Kain, a powerful alien being, escapes from the prison of the Galactic Police. In a familiar plot device owing heavily to the time-travel conventions from The Terminator and Back to the Future, Kain transports himself back in time to kill Tenchi's mother to prevent the birth of Tenchi, who saved the universe in the original series. Tenchi, fading from existence, must travel with his friends back to 1970 to save his mother. The soundtrack features a song performed by German New Wave musician Nina Hagen. ~ Jonathan E. A great touching movie.. better than the TV series... by markhl March 25, 2003 - 7:05 PM PST

The one line plot summary that I read does not do this movie justice. Although I thought the original series of Tenchi was good (not great..), I was VERY impressed with this movie. As Tenchi and the "gang" travels back to battle the class-one criminal Kain, we also meet the young version of Tenchi's mother, Achika, and father as they meet and fall in love. In Tenchi Muyo in Love, Tenchi (and the viewer) learns of the reason for his mother's early death, which went unexplained in the TV series.

Sure, there is the expected comedic inter-relationships that Tenchi TV viewers have enjoyed but the touching love story beneath this plot is what remains.. the love between a son who had longed after a mother who passed away when he was so young and a mother who meets a future son who she will not get to see grow up. The soliloquy by Tenchi's mother before the closing credits is probably the most touching bit of anime that I have ever seen and may have you re-watching the movie a few times.
