Bawdy but not explicit, this lusty Japanese farce tells the tale of teenage Shinohara who longs to join the well-muscled ultra macho ranks of Makio Mitani's patriotic fighters, a corps of handsome hunks first seen training in a local gym during the opening credits. Shinohara is delighted when he is accepted for enlistment. Following his initiation ceremony, Shinohara is assigned to senior member Takizawa's unit for further instructions. That night the youth learns more than a few lessons, but not about fighting. Instead he finds the whole unit engaged in an all-night debauched bout of boozing and vigorous homosexual activity. In the daytime he undergoes real military training for an upcoming government coupe. The soldiers and leaders realize that they will most likely fail and seem to eagerly anticipate the hara kari that is to follow their attack. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

If you've always craved to see a 'sex' film with some intelligence and humor (and even a bit of history and controversy!), you needn't look any further. This is a tongue-in-cheek satire based on Yukio Mishima's ultrapatriotic private army who undoubtedly had heated nights of passion after their laborious days of super-macho training. This film captures the hypocrisy of this particular 'puritan' movement in Japan, but the humor is essentially universal since we see movements like this in many cultures. It's hilarious to hear these guys planning their coup of the government, as they're only eight young lads and one really screwy leader (I mean screwy in both senses!) There is a LOT of really passionate sex in this and even though it's soft-core, I would say that it's one of the sexiest films I've ever seen (it helps if you have an active imagination!). Rent this with Paul Schrader's masterpiece "Mishima" for full appreciation. |
