Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug's blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. Renton's two best friends are also junkies: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), a snappy dresser obsessed with James Bond, and Spud (Ewan Bremner), a guileless nerd who suggests Pee Wee Herman's debauched cousin. Renton and his pals also hang out with Begbie (Robert Carlyle), a borderline psychotic who loathes junkies even though he drinks like a fish. After one too many brushes with the law, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, Sick Boy, Begbie, and Spud all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

| Trainspotting is a cult film, and by panning it I will be regarded as helpful as your local social worker. Actually, it is a fine film, well worth watching. It is also one of those movies whose message demands a response, perhaps on the negative side. No, I am not going to begin tongue-clucking about drug use. It is interesting that the movie has been damned for condoning drugs as well as praised for condemning drugs. There is truth no doubt on both sides. What does bother me is the rather facile finger-pointing that occasionally emerges. For me the most intriguing scene in the movie, which has its share of ordinary shockers, is the one in which the judge peers down in all his bewigged splendor on the hapless hero. Renton is no fool. He beseeches God's help in overcoming this terrible affliction. One can almost see the conflict between sympathy and skepticism raging in the judge's expressionless face. God, of course, has nothing to do with it. |

Trainspotting depicts the lives of despicable Scottish low-lifes. Sociopaths, junkies, felons, and victims all swirl about in this stylish cesspool. Atlthough their plight is romanticized and stylized, I did not come away feeling it was sexy or glorious. Unless dead babies are glorious.
I did, however, enjoy watching this movie. The characters (well, a few of them) are likeable and fight hard to "choose life" in situations that are black funny. Their lives ares so bleak and depressing that the characters and the audience have to laugh to preserve sanity.
If you are a "say no to drugs" person, do not watch this movie. If you realize that life can get complicated and disheartening and painful, take a chance. Take a peer into this world.
