Yasujiro Ozu's Ohayo (Good Morning) is a comedy about a pair of boys who bring much trouble to their family and community by refusing to do very basic activities. The boys desire a television, but their father refuses. They are so insistent that the father eventually commands them to be quiet. They take him quite literally and refuse to speak at all, not even a typical polite morning greeting. Their impoliteness begins to weigh down both the family and the town as it goes against the ordered social structure of Japanese culture. The film is a remake of Ozu's earlier 1932 silent film I Was Born, But... ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

making my way through all of the ozu films, and amazed again that i made it through another typical fifties-era movie...
trust me, i have no qualms about breaking out my movie-gong... and i absolutely hate fifties-era storytelling... but i watch this to the end because of the quirkyness of the japanese characters, customs and beliefs...
someone should say that these films are nothing spectacular, not worth watching in the least, and not groundbreaking in any way... they are only as interesting as are all foreign films--only because of the foreign-ness... |

| It might not be his best (and yes it's saccharin), I feel it's worth a gander. Typical of Ozu, this one has a simple story line, but it's rich with humor and charm. Can't say enough about the photography. Though most of the camera shots are static, they're so rich with geometrical complexity that they keep your eye busy. |

| This one's almost too charming. Beautifully rendered film and characters, plus a sneak peak into Japanese suburbia forty odd years ago. Watch it, and loudly proclaim your sweater-wearing movie nerdiness. |
