Synopsis
It's not easy being teenaged martial artist Ranma Saotome, but it's even worse when your martial-artist father Genma takes you from home at an early age to go on a decade-long training mission. He doesn't speak a word of Chinese, and yet he insists upon bringing you to the cursed training ground known as Jusenkyo, where falling into one of the many springs there instantly turn you into whoever - or whatever - drowned there last. And then, the two of you have this little accident.... From now on, a splash of cold water will turn your father into a giant panda, while you...well, you turn into a red-haired (and problematically well-built) female version of yourself. Hot water will reverse the effect, but only until the next time. What's a half-guy, half-girl to do?

Starting to overload on wackier characters by hneline1 March 19, 2003 - 9:25 PM PST

These episodes get sillier as Shampoo's grandmother comes to Japan to aid Shampoo in catching Ranma. The grandmother is a master of the martial arts, of course, like everyone else, and Ranma has his hands full trying to beat her. My favorite episode on this disk is the race between Akane and Shampoo, where the goal is to beat all the other competitors while holding onto a bowl of ramen in the traditional Japanese delivery box (similar to a waiter's race over here). It was funny wondering how many times the ramen could be tossed, kicked, dropped and battered while being saved at the last minute.

My only complaint is that as this series escalates with more characters and wackier situations, I start to feel overload watching the non-stop martial arts and the unfulfilled tension between Akane and Ramna. I think that the first season had more character development, especially for Akane, and this second season is substituting an abundance of characters in the place of Akane or Ranma's growth. This doesn't take away from enjoying the wackiness of the series, but I wonder when and if those two are ever going to get together! (Considering that this is only the second out of seven TV seasons and several movies and at least one OVA series, my guess is that it will take a long long time.)

Spoiled rich-girl klepto Azusa is sooooooo annoying! by hneline1 February 22, 2003 - 6:00 PM PST

The second season of Ramna 1/2 starts with a story arc about "martial arts pairs ice skating", where Akane and boy-Ranma are challenged to an ice skating competition by the egotistical hunk Mikado and the spoiled rich-girl kleptomaniac Azusa. Although there are hilarious moments (the fight sequence between Ryoga and Ranma comes to mind), Azusa is soooo annoying that we were glad when this arc was over, and we were glad to hear that Azusa doesn't show up again (hopefully!).

The most memorable episode in this disk is the last one, where something is revealed about Ranma and his history with felines. This is a fun episode and there may be a new character introduced -- a cat that Shampoo sends from China. I'm sure we'll find out more in the next disk. This second season may have started a little weakly with the ice skating story, but this continues to be a great situational comedy with lots of slapstick and martial arts moments.
