Director Federico Fellini's Orchestra Rehearsal (Prova d'Orchestra) was originally made for Italian TV, then given a limited theatrical release in the US. Using a symphony orchestra as a metaphor for Mankind, Fellini explores the various joys, sorrows, frustrations and triumphs of the musicians. The orchestrations heard throughout are handled by Nino Rota. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The description of the movie sounds dry and clinical. In actuality, human nature itself is on display here. The various agendas--artistic, sexual, political--of the musicians, management, and the union representative become the springboard for a fast-paced, well-orchestrated series of musical/personal moments. Did you know that the first violin has it in for the oboe? That the clarinet is the cock of the orchestra? That flautists are dippy because they're blowing all the time?
The impassioned viewpoints and philosophical underpinnings to the artistic viewpoints of all concerned are touching, hilarious, and sorely missed from everyday life. The wrecking ball as Time, as Change. The conductor reverting to his native German as he rants at his underlings. The generation gap and revolt against authority. The sensitivity of the frumpy-looking harpist revealed in her monologue.
For me, Orchestra Rehearsal ranks just behind 8 1/2 on my list of Fellini favorites. Nino Rota's music is what ?. . . halfway between John Cage's and Eric Satie's?? It lingers.
Caveat: not for those unprepared for some fairly allegro subtitle reading, nor for those who avoid "classical" music at all costs. |
