Probably the best-known scientist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking works on the very edge of theoretical physics, dealing with the basic elements of the universe. In each episode of this series, originally produced for PBS, viewers journey into Hawking's world, a world where theory and conjecture are the currency. Each episode presents heavy science with the down-to-earth style that made Hawking's book A Brief History of Time a New York Times best-seller. ~ Rob Ferrier, All Movie Guide

Stephen Hawking's Universe is perhaps one of the best cosmological overviews I have ever seen. This is the sort of documentary that I wish I had seen in my "formative" years; I'd probably be in a different profession. Each installment is structurally similar with Dr. Hawking rolling up to the camera and introducing the relevant topic, his synthesized voice dropping conceptually heavy bombs in layman's language.
Most of each episode is a series of interviews with various experts ranging from astronomy and chemistry to engineering. These segments are edited together artfully and graphics are used where necessary but not gratuitously (IMHO). Stylistically, the commentators are sometimes presented in a way that made me wonder if they were having a hard time keeping a straight face (I remember on segment where Marie Curie's granddaughter seems to be rolling across the floor on an office chair with the camera's POV firmly locked to her deadpan expression) but I suppose that is the price you pay to make science accessible. Overall, I highly recommend this series if you like learning about the BIG PICTURE!
