Synopsis
Primarily a showcase for the gory special-effects artistry of Gianetto de Rossi, this revolting horror film stars Giovanni Lombardo Radice (also known as "John Morghen") as a drug-dealer who comes to the Amazon jungle from New York looking for a cache of stolen emeralds. He joins some American college students and soon introduces them to his special lifestyle, raping a native girl, then beating a young Indio senseless before gouging out his eyeball with a knife. Naturally, the local cannibals don't take too well to this treatment, so they cut off Radice's penis with a machete, gouge out his eye, then scalp him and eat his brain. Deciding that his companions are also to blame, the natives hang a young woman by impaling her breasts on meat hooks while her sorrowful companion sings "Red River Valley." Eventually, one woman gets back to New York, where she reads a dissertation on cannibalism to earn her PhD. Cult filmmaker Umberto Lenzi really outdid himself with this bloody spectacle, which maintains a consistent air of cruelty with a non-stop procession of beatings, rapes, real-life animal slaughter, larva-chewing, genital-chopping, cannibalism and the infamous meathook scene. Definitely for acquired tastes only, this nauseatingly effective shocker features a brief appearance by adult-film star Richard Bolla as a New York policeman. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

The movie was not as gory as the synopsis would have you believe. Funny- Before the movie comes on, some chick gives a warning message advising me that the film is repulsive and has 2 dozen scenes of a sadistic nature. I said, "Give me your best shot, Lady" and was very disappointed. The actual murders were alright. There were a couple genital mutilations. The one thing disturbing about the film were the animal killings. There were at least three and I swear that was real. It made me sick to my stomach watching those animals squeal in pain.
The story was pretty silly and predictable. A scientist wants to prove that cannibalism does not exist, so she goes on this journey with her friend and brother and try to get them killed. Of course, they stumble upon a tribe they heard were cannibals and inadvertantly scare them off. Eventually, the cannibals exact revenge for the misdoings of a previous white dude that visited them. When the group is confused as to why the cannibals hate them, the main chick starts preaching "Violence breeds violence" and "The white man is evil." I understand the point of the film because I am sitting there watching it. I do not need the writer to spell it out for me. That is a sign of bad writing; even the writer knows the movie does not convey the message. Okay, I get it, your movie is stupid, but do not insult the audience watching it. I have no idea what happened in the end because I turned it off when that chick started talking again. The first I have seen by Lenzi, but I am willing to give it another whirl.
