Yah- I agree- it's similar to chungking express in structure, but it's a lot moodier and darker- though it did have really funny, hilarious moments. Hong Kong feels like the Los Angeles of Blade Runner. But it also feels placeless- like the characters in this film had no home- displaced people in a large, dark city.

Sub-par version of Chung King Express

I rented this after seeing Chung King Express, which I really liked. Fallen Angels has the same directing style, the same plot structure, and similar story elements as CKE, but I found this movie to be the lesser of the two. The film stock used is a lot cheaper than CKE, which is strange considering it's a newer movie-- but it kind of adds to the indie feel of it. I didn't really feel for the characters in this one as much as I did with CKE. I would recommend this if you're a big fan of Kar-Wai's, otherwise you should see Chung King Express.
