Not a complete success

I found I couldn't enjoy this movie quite as much as many other viewers did. Christopher Walken and Denis Leary both fully engaged me whenever they were onscreen, but the film seemed like a collection of interesting bits that never quite gelled into a whole.

Pleasant Surprise

I didn't know anything about this movie when I randomly rented it, a rarity for most of the stuff I watch. IT was four dollars well spent, and another fifteen dollars well spent after I purchased the DVD. It has a great cast and anything with Christopher Walken almost always deserves a rental in my book.

The basic premise of the movie is Elise has been kidnapped with a ransom of 2 million dollars. Her brother, her boyfriend, and their group of friends decide to kidnap ex-mobster Christopher Walken so they can use his contacts to get the ransom loot. Tempers are lost and suspicions arise as Walken begins to suggest that perhaps there is a traitor within the boys' ranks.

What follows is a very nice twisting and turning of events as the true kidnappers are revealed. The DVD includes alternative endings, deleted scenes, and director/producer commentary.

I thought the cast was great and what could have been an average kidnapping-plans-gone-awry movie was saved due to a good story and even better storytelling and direction (which, by the way, is director Peter O'Falloran's feature film debut. He does have a great deal of TV under his belt, including: thirtysomething, Northern Exposure, Profiler, and American Gothic, to name a few.)
The story kept things interesting and it's good to watch with a group of people while trying to place bets on who's-screwing-who?
