Rock's Gustav Mahler?

"Cowgirl in the Sand" synapse activated by Young's name, I took a chance. Though that song wasn't included, I enjoyed the music a bunch. Director Jarmusch put together a strong package.

Mahler (1860-1911) was the climax to the tonal edifice of five centuries of "classical" music. Like Neil/Crazy Horse, Gustav liked sprawling cosmologies, raga-like and well-developed complex harmonies, and long, carefully built crescendos. It's said that the most important elements in a musical performance are an awareness of and an impulse toward the overall arc of the piece's structure. Both musicians meet there. They also share--granted, off-putting to some--heart-on-sleeve emotionality/sincerity. Geezer rock may have its horrors, but these guys' symbiosis gets cosmic. Gus might have approved.

Hmm. . . Bjork and Anton Webern??

Grainy film makes this a horribly confusing film to watch. The band knows four chords and that's what they play, endlessly. Now I know why Neil Young and Crazy Horse has a cult following and nothing else.
