Two short masterful shots of the ocean (a beach and ocean swells) were all I really enjoyed. At a superficial uncritical level this film has been well received, but there have been others who like myself were bothered by the overly-ambitious attempt to span centuries in a two hour movie. The grail-like powers of the violin were not convincing. The cultured Samuel Jackson character ended up as disappointing, why is unclear. The violin came through extreme mistreatment, and this alone seemed implausible. A high budget, over-reaching and dissipated film is the result.
