The highlight of this collection of middle-length animated kids' films is The Snow Queen, adapted closely from Hans Christian Andersen's story. According to nausicaa.net, this is the movie that got Hayao Miyazaki excited about being an animator: "[Miyazaki] says that he learned [from The Snow Queen] that characters in animation can act if they are animated well enough, and animation can move people as other media can do."
Its influence on his work, on his studio's work, is obvious from the first shot to the last. If you thought comparing Spirited Away to Alice in Wonderland didn't feel right, then you really need to see this -- it's the missing link.
The english soundtrack is really good, too, the new producers treated the film very well.
Also on the disc are The Wild Swans, another faithful adaptation, this time as an expressionist work that borders on full-blown ballet, similar to The Color of Pomegranates; and a third, Alice and the Mystery of the Third Planet, a science fiction story that manages to cross Solaris with Yellow Submarine and still be fun for kids (very weird animals!). |
