So the first movie was a heartwarming family movie. And this is a heartwarming family movie... with a big dollup of the surreal. The set design and direction is over the top to more greatly contrast the country and the city, but the aesthetics are consistent such that the effect is otherworldly rather than campy. One of my favorite scenes of all time is the trial of the farmer's wife. The whole thing lasts about thirty seconds, but it's so carefully orchestrated and wacky that I immediately went back and watched it again.
Quirky. A cult classic. Made me wish orangutans could be nominated for oscars. |

| Unlike the original Babe , this sequel never achieves the same sense of wonder and simple profundity. This sequel tries to compare the good country life with the badness of city life, filled with disillusionment, uncaring neighbors, death in the streets, and humans against homeless animals. Of course, Babe improves everyone's lives with his caring and loyalty. Well, besides the fact that the country/city contrast is waaaaay too shallow for me to swallow, none of the characters were well-developed and Babe's achievements were too random. There was no focus to the plot. The slapstick was out of place. This is a fun kids movie, but there isn't much for adults to bite into. |
