Having read the book and seen the first movie. This version of the controversial book is very flat. The weakness that Jeremy Irons portrays I feel isn't what Humbert Humbert was in the book. Dominique Swain plays "Lo" with an almost maniac fire but at times takes the mania road to far as to leave someone wonder why Humbert has fallen so far into his condition over her. And although I haven't read the book in awhile, I don't remember Quilty being anything more than a figment in Humbert's demented imagination. I don't ever expect a movie to match a book phrase for phrase but Lyne's vision seem to just take the barebones plot from the book and picture it up with great cinematography. Also any erotic nature in the book was removed from the movie due to public outcry supposedly.. but I just don't see the connection in this movie. The one thing I felt was better than the Kubrick version was the explanation of Humbert's condition. The losing of his first love at an extremely delicate time and age.
Very disappointing this Lolita is. In all colors.
