Don't be too loyal or too smart

I am so used to seeing Tony Leung play the good guy, it was a little shocking at first, to see him play Sam, a corrupted cop, who is also an agent for one of the two most powerful triads in Macau. The movie only bolsters Tony's reputation as a gifted actor capable of morphing into the role of any character he chooses. Tony's nemesis, Lau Ching-wan, also delivers an excellent performance as a cool-headed assassin who slips into Macau illegally to complete a mission.

The story is a little complicated to describe without giving away too much. It helps to pay close attention at the very beginning of the movie. Basically, Leung has one day to find out who has been spreading a rumor that his triad boss (subtitle calls him "Mr. K") has offered a $5 million reward for the death of this main rival. Mr. K suspects the aging but still powerful former Macau triad leader, Mr. Hung, of masterminding the rumor, and Mr. K is in fear for his own life.

Although this movie doesn't have much gore (compared to other HK triad movies) it does have a few scenes sufficiently disturbing to make me shut my eyes. For example, even though I've watched the film twice, both times, I squeezed my eyes shut at the torture scene involving the extraction of a finger nail.

The only disappointment I have with this film is the quick ending. After a slow (not boring slow) but engaging build up of the plot, I thought it ended too abruptly. I was hoping for a clever twist or maybe I was just hoping for more because the story was getting so good. Still, I'd recommend this movie to anyone interested in a good suspense. I do want to point out the English subtitle isn't the greatest but it won't get you lost.
