The Matrix back to product details

"Your favorite movie?!?! Why?"

Like most things, the reason we watch movies are subjective. For instance, I love the escapist movies, where is different from everyday life. I love movies that bend reality, though not outright break it. I love movies that require some thinking. Doesn't have to be a multilayered, complex story, but it does have to be more than just action.

For those reasons, then, it's not a surprise why The Matrix is my favorite. It's a great escapist action movie that requires the viewer to think about things. It's not grandmaster chess tournament thinking, but it's not mindless. The notion of reality is bent and yeah, I've had those "what if" moments after watching the movie.

Another reason I love this movie is the introduction. I went into this movie not hearing ANYTHING about it. And so, after the first scene, I was captivated.

The movie plays like a comic book. You can actually see the movie in terms of comic strip panels. Even the dialogue -- considered a bit lame by some -- is the perfect comic-book dialogue. Imagine a panel where Neo is first introduced to Morpheus. Morpheus, in his black leather outfit and sunglasses, standing in a room with a window with a flash of lightning on the outside. Or, think about Morpheus explaining to Neo about the Matrix. I could easily see that in a comic book format. And that's one of the overlooked things about The Matrix -- it's a great comic book movie.

The Matrix is a bit of HK action films, Wu Xia, industrial rock soundtrack, hacking subculture, and comic-book imagery mixed together in an original way. And it works.

The romance sub-plot was awkward and some of the explanations were weak -- it's not perfect. So I give this movie a 9/10, but The Matrix is still the best example of why I go to movies and what better reason than that to make a movie your favorite.
