It don't make no sense

Based on a longer manga (comic book) series, veteran director Rintaro (Metropolis, Galaxy Express 999) decided to concentrate on the climactic final battle scenes for this 90 minute movie, without explaining much of what happened leading up to it. What this means for us viewers is that "it don't make no sense." For example, in the opening sequence, teenager Kamui is looking at his long-haired mother in a dreamlike cloud of cherry blossoms when suddenly her clothes burn off so she's naked and she digs her fingers into her abdomen to pull out a huge bloody sword and dies. If you can handle it beyond that, you'll see that there are too many major characters and the battles aren't too interesting. I lost interest after a few more dream sequences and fast forwarded through the rest of the disk, which made it better because I could still read the subtitles in hopes that it would make more sense... but it didn't.
