In this animated fantasy from Japan, the planet of Banipal Witt is a strange place where the sun has remarkable powers, turning people into cats and turning dogs into vicious monsters. Buburina, a wicked cat with a talent for magic, can turn people or animals into balloons with her touch and has learned to control an especially fearsome monster dog, Papadoll, with an eye toward making the entire planet bend to her will. Two children, a group of kitty engineers, and Papadoll's former master all team up to defeat Buburina in a bid to save Banipal Witt. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

| This movie gets a 10 for its amazing visuals and deft storytelling. Sure, the straightforward storyline is targeted at young viewers, but the director avoids making any of the characters black and white. (The villain may be bad, but we can feel for her. And the hero must acknowledge his own bad deeds to resolve the plot.) Forget all that, though, and just sit back and WATCH the movie. Visually brilliant. There's something amazing in every shot, and the draftmanship is stunning. In fact, you can think of Catnapped as Miyazaki-lite. (And I don't mean that in a bad way!) My 7-year old daughter loved it, but when I buy it, I'm buying it for me. |
