Inspired by the famous Johan Lindstrom Saxon ballad, this Swedish film involves circus performer Elvira Madigan (Pia Degermark) and army officer Sixten Sparre (Thommy Berggren). Sparre breaks loose of the oppressive atmosphere of both the military and his tradition-bound family to conduct a passionate affair with Elvira. Aware only of one another's presence, the lovers refuse to recognize that they have stepped irreversibly on the road to tragedy. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

| It starts off a little slow, repeating the musical theme almost incessantly, and I was pleased when the film pulled itself together with shifting scenes, happenings, and characters and kept my interest through to the ending. Very definitely a travelogue of Swedish summer, and that in itself is a payoff. The main characters are appealing, and their romance is realistic given their circumstance. I found Amazon.com a useful resource for dvd review of "Elvira Madigan", and also suggest the following link which tells the sad story of Pia Degermark's life. She was 17 when the film was made and is now 54. http://www.nkmr.org/english/pia_degermark_you_always_get_another_chance.htm |

A love story rivaling Romeo & Juliet. Elvira Madigen is a doomed fairy tale about two impossible lovers. He, a deserter from the Swedish army and she, a runaway tightrope walker. They defy all the social and economic conventions of their age and live as children, without a care in the world, just longing for each other's embrace. There are very, very few movies in which love seems genuine. This is one of them. Elvira Madigen is a beautiful story told mostly in images, long takes, long shots, and a slow, moving rhythm. The music, from Vivaldi and Beethoven, captures the summer, almost dreamlike romance of these two lovers. The stream scene after Elvira and Sixten quarrel is unforgettable. The summers in full bloom, beautiful and radiantly captured, made me want to return to Europe and enjoy a summer romance.
