This film consists of two separate pieces. The first is a documentary from the '60s that follows Canadian singer/songwriter/poet Leonard Cohen around for several days, interviewing him on his poetry and budding musical career. The second piece is comprised of four experimental music videos based on Cohen's music. ~ Ed Atkinson, All Movie Guide

This documentary is an interesting period piece, shot a couple of years before Cohen was to make it big as a musician. Accompanying some amusingly earnest narration, we are treated to glimpses of the day-to-day (and night-to-night) life of Leonard Cohen, the Poet. Some of the poetry that he reads has no doubt lost something of its immediacy and effect over the decades, but Cohen himself is hard to take one's eyes off of, and as such he makes a great subject for a documentary. The man oozes charisma, wit, and charm.
My main complaints with this disc is that the film itself is rather short, clocking in at around 45 minutes, and the only bonus features are a music video from 1988 and some other brief films that he made for the CBC. Nonetheless, if you're a fan of Cohen (and who isn't?) you'll probably get a kick out of seeing this. |
