Vaudeville back to product details

great archival footage, poor compilation and interpretation

Recommended for some wonderful archival footage. It's a shame though that we only see brief clips from most of the performances, which left me wanting to see more of them. So many idiosyncratic, offbeat, and hilarious vaudeville acts give us a generous portrayal of fascinating esoteric americana!

Unfortunately, the documentary is framed through the lens of "tragedy." Too much attention paid to the tragic death of the vaudeville theaters and not enough attention to the various ways that the genre lives on through TV variety and talk shows, broadway, etc.

Excellent and extensive reference to racial issues faced by African-Americans and other minority groups in vaudeville. Otherwise, the documentary remains unfocussed and lacks thoughtful interpretation. But I must repeat, the archival footage is simply fascinating!
