A rather free-form immersion in the day of Joe, a hustler, there's certainly a it of "Flesh" in "Midnight Cowboy" (both were being shot around the same time). Director Morrissey, whether by choice or necessity, edited the film "in camera," which explains the very rough cutting style. It takes some getting used to but ultimately enhances the documentary flavor. It's a film obsessed with Beauty--certainly Joe's, but everyone else's comes through too. The central role reversal, having Joe as an object of desire rather than the traditional Hollywood leading lady, is pretty amusing. Joe spends so much of the movie taking off his clothes at the behest of others that it's no wonder he's exhausted by the end. The dialogue (semi-improvised?) is frequently hilarious. This film ought to be better known; it preceded countless "examinations" of the hustler life, most of which are markedly unbelievable and inferior. This DVD, by the way, has a beautiful transfer: vibrant colors and crisp sound that makes you feel like you're right there in Warhol's Factory c. 1968.

The movie itself is a bit off the wall of course which is what one would expect from Andy Warhol. Although there is sex in the movie, it isn't so graphic so that one would consider it porn.

Joe Dallesandro is a natural. He's beautiful and is at total ease in front of the camera. I would have liked this DVD solely on the beauty and charm of Joe. The reason i gave it a low rating was because it skips all over the place. It doesn't seem though as if the DVD is skipping but rather the film itself which was transferred to DVD.

At times it seems as if the skipping was intentional, like some sort of twisted artistic touch Warhol gave to his film.

Whether intentional or not, the skipping really interrupts with the enjoyment of the film.
