For his sophomore stab at directing, actor/writer/director Jon Favreau (Swingers, Made), took on this holiday comedy starring Saturday Night Live-alum Will Ferrell. Ferrell stars as Buddy, a regular-sized man who was raised as an elf by Santa Claus (Edward Asner). When the news is finally broken to Buddy that he's not a real elf, he decides to head back to his place of birth, New York City, in search of his biological family. Elf also stars James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel, and Bob Newhart. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

| ELF starts a bit slowly and wobbly but quickly finds its footing once Will Ferrell arrives in NYC. From then on, there's barely a moment that isn't charming fun--due to this actor's talent and believability, and to director's Jon Favreau's skill at juggling clichés to original effect. Nearly every scene is first-rate, until the sentimental, you-gotta-believe ending, at least. And even that is handled with a bit more originality/less sentimentality than usual. Yes, this kind of Christmas fantasy is forgettable even as you're watching, but whatever you predisposition, you and your family (or just you, if you're family-free) will probably have a surprisingly good time. |
