Bad Santa back to product details

The concept and previews didn't do this movie justice. It's one of those comedies where most of the funny parts can't be shown on tv, or without knowing the characters. There were a couple moments I almost choked from laughing so hard. Excellent for the dark and twisted sense of humor.

Not for kids, but...

If you're old enough to take it tongue-in-cheek, it's f__ng hilarious.

Drunk people are funny! Or not.

I love black comedies -- but I think I've found the limit of my tolerance in this film. Zwigoff milks the main character's cronic alcoholism for gags, but I was unable to laugh. "Hey, look, he's destroying stuff and hurting people who care about him! Drunk people are funny!" Maybe alcoholism is too personal of an issue for me, but I simply found this film to be sad and depressing.

That doesn't make this a bad film -- maybe the thematic ambivalence makes it a really good film. But casual entertainment it is not.

Is good

Disclaimer: This movie is not for kids. Well, not for anyone under the age of 18, that is. There is a lot of adult content i,e swearing (profusely), sexual situations (overt, but mostly implied), and vices (drinking, stealing, etc.). Our (anti) hero is an alcoholic, suicidal, sex-crazed safe cracker who masquerades (badly) as Santa Clause for the Christmas season. His cohort, a dwarf, who plays as Santa's "little" helper, heads up the operation.

This movie is not your typical slapstick schtick, or even a buddy-buddy situation. It is however, a comedy that can almost be classifed as black (comedy). Furthermore, it's more about redemption (yes, I said redemption) and realizing that there are a few reasons to keep on living. However, with that said, this film makes no apologies for how rough and despicable the main characters are. The end was a little too "Hollywood", but it didn't take anything away from the initial feel of the movie.

If you like biting humor, this flick could be your cup of tea.
